Our wedding will be held at the de Young museum, situated in Golden Gate Park. The surrounding neighborhoods are primarily residential. This makes them a great option if you want to stay in an affordable Airbnb rental, and if you're staying just for the weekend. Check out the next section if you plan to stick around and explore San Francisco, as there are fewer tourist-y/sightseeing opportunities in these neighborhoods.
Richmond ($) - 5 min drive to de Young
Bordering Golden Gate Park to the south and the Presidio to the north, the Richmond District is a residential neighborhood and is the closest to the de Young. There are lots of great East Asian restaurants to choose from and it’s relatively easy to get to downtown San Francisco by driving or taking public transport, taking about 30 mins. The Richmond is also where Tali grew up! More info | Airbnb rentals
Inner Sunset ($) - 5-10 min drive to de Young
This area is in close proximity to our wedding venue and is a great option for affordable AirBnB rentals. Inner Sunset is a quieter neighbourhood that is popular with younger families and students. There are great ethnic restaurants here. Getting into downtown San Francisco is possible via public transport and takes about 30 mins. More info | Airbnb rentals
Outer Sunset ($) - 5-10 min drive to de Young
This neighbourhood meets the Pacific Ocean at the west and borders Inner Sunset to the east. It is family friendly and great for a quiet option away from the center of the city. Getting into downtown San Francisco is possible via public transport and takes about 45 mins. More info | Airbnb rentals
There are lots of interesting neighbourhoods that are located conveniently for access to both downtown and the de Young wedding venue. Each has its own culture and character. Even if you don’t decide to stay in one of these areas, we recommend a visit to these spots.
The Marina ($/$$) - 30 mins drive to de Young
With the best view of the bay and the Golden Gate bridge, the Marina is one of the most idyllic neighborhoods in the city and has lots of affordable hotel options. Chestnut and Union streets offer endless boutique shopping and upscale California dining experiences. It is home to the Palace of Fine Arts and its close proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge means you can easily drive or take a stroll to San Francisco’s most famous landmark. The Marina is also very close to Fisherman’s Wharf, the most popular neighborhood for tourists. Getting from the Marina to downtown is easy via public transport but if you feel ambitious you can walk it and enjoy SF’s famously steep streets! More info | Airbnb rentals | Nearby Hotels
Hayes Valley ($) - 10 min drive to de Young
This is one of San Francisco’s most trendy neighbourhoods. Besides lots of pop-up restaurants, Hayes Valley has cool clothing boutiques and independent stores for everything from travel accessories and gadgets, to books and homeware. It’s one of our favorites. Access to downtown is a breeze via the MUNI and takes about 15-20 mins. More info | Airbnb rentals | Nearby Hotels
Pacific Heights & Fillmore ($$) - 15 min drive to de Young
Home to San Francisco wealthiest residences, this prim and proper neighborhood has old world elegance and beautiful architecture. The northern parts of the neighborhood have some of SF’s most beautiful views of the bay while the south borders Japantown, home of many great restaurants. Fillmore street is in the center of “Pac Heights” and is lined with upmarket restaurants and designer stores. This area is more expensive to stay in, but you can’t beat it’s quintessential San Francisco vibes. There is easy access to public transport in the southern part of the neighborhood, but if you want the views in the north, be prepared to walk, drive or take a cab/Uber! Civic Center ($$) - 20 mins drive to de Young
The Civic center is home to many of San Francisco’s arts institutions including Ballet, Opera and Symphony. It is also where we both live so pick this neighborhood if you want to be close to us! It’s one of the most centrally located neighborhoods with reasonably priced hotels and very easy access to most tourist attractions, so it’s a great base if you plan to do a lot of sightseeing. Public transport is a breeze and you can walk downtown in about 15 minutes. If you do choose to walk around, we strongly advise that you avoid the Tenderloin area east of Van Ness St. south of Geary St. More info | Airbnb rentals | Nearby Hotels
Downtown / Union Square ($$$) - 40 mins drive to de Young
The heart of San Francisco’s commercial activity, this is where you will find the city’s largest hotels as well as all the shopping you could dream of. If you want to be where the action is, then this is best option, but it’s also the most expensive. There is lots to see and do here, but if you stay downtown, don’t miss out on all the other amazing neighborhoods and experiences the city has to offer! We strongly advise that you avoid the Tenderloin area west of Jones St, south of Geary St and north of Market St. Please allow for at least 40 minutes to arrive at the wedding venue if you stay here because of traffic! Fisherman’s Wharf / North Beach ($$) - 45 mins to de Young
The most popular neighbourhood for tourists, this area provides beautiful views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. It’s is also where most of the popular tourist adventures start such as “Biking the Bridge” and visiting Alcatraz island or walking through Chinatown. If you are only in the city for a few days, this neighborhood is great for sightseeing and there are plenty of budget hotels and mid-range hotels to choose from. It is, however, the furthest away from our wedding venue, so please allow for at least 45 minutes to arrive at the wedding because of traffic! More info | Airbnb rentals | Nearby Hotels
Haight Ashbury ($) - 10 min drive to de Young
This is where the hippie movement started in the 60s and 70s and is still one of the most eclectic neighbourhoods in San Francisco. If you want to experience some of SF’s history and it’s more fringe residents, this is the place to stay! It is about 20 minutes to downtown either driving or via public transport. Mission District / Valencia ($/$$) - 25 min drive to de Young
This is hipster central. If you want to checkout SF’s edgier side and hang out with the cool kids, then you should definitely visit this neighborhood. The Mission has become a mish mash of trendy coffee bars, fancy pastry shops, vintage stores, and designer boutiques. Originally, this was a thriving home for the Latino community and the southern parts of the neighborhood have held on to their Latino influence, so if you want the Best Burrito in America, this is the place to go. Rental accommodation is cheap here, but there aren’t many hotels to choose from. More info | Airbnb rentals | Nearby Hotels
